If there has been a notable figure in the history of the Basque Country, it is Saint Ignatius of Loyola (St. Ignatius), founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

The Sanctuary of Loyola receives visitors from all over the world every year, and has become an essential place for spiritual tourism. The architectural complex is formed by the tower-house of the Loyola family, which was the birthplace of St. Ignatius, and its surrounding buildings. The centre is home to the Basilica of Loyola, an impressive Baroque temple from the 18th century.

If you want to complete your spiritual journey, you can do the “Route of the Three Temples”, by also visiting the sanctuaries of Aránzazu and La Antigua (Zumarraga) in the surrounding area.
